AWIC, a voluntary organization, works towards the promotion and development of literature for children in India. It represents writers, illustrators, librarians, editors, publishers, and all others interested in children's literature. Founded by the late K. Shankar Pillai in 1981, AWIC has moved from strength to strength, making its presence felt internationally with its books for children.

AWIC endorses the ethics and functions of the global organisation, IBBY, after joining in as a National Section. In 1991 AWIC Children’s Library Project received the International IBBY-ASAHI Award for Reading Promotion. Manorama Jafa, elected to the Executive Committee of IBBY (1997-2000) also remained the Chairperson of the IBBY-ASAHI Reading Promotion Award Jury. Nilima Sinha remained on the Executive Committee (2000-2004) and was nominated as the Vice-President of IBBY. In 2006, Dr. Ira Saxena was elected on Executive Committee and remained a jury member of the IBBY-ASAHI Reading Promotion Award. Besides regular participation in IBBY activities, in 1998 AWIC organised the 26th IBBY World Congress on Children’s Books in India – Peace through Children’s Books. It has been the Indian section of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) since 1990.

AWIC has published stories, poems, plays, translations and biographies by its members. It has also spearheaded literacy projects and children's library projects. AWIC conducts regular workshops for members, helping them to hone their writing, illustrating and storytelling skills.

AWIC has organized various national and international events and is also the recipient of the 1991 IBBY-Asahi Reading Promotion Award.

AWIC has promoted Indian children's literature through regular participation in prominent children's book exhibitions and book displays abroad. AWIC members regularly participate in international seminars, conferences and storytelling sessions.

In 2005 AWIC celebrated the International Children's Book Day through several functions like the National Convention on Children's Libraries, the Asian Conference on Storytelling to Promote the Reading Habit in Children and the release of a poster entitled 'Books Are My Magic Eyes'.
